FRIENDS OF THE NAMEKAGON BARRENS WILDLIFE AREA

MISSION & GOALS

Mission: The Friends of the Namekagon Barrens Wildlife Area (NBWA) was formed to support and promote Pine and Oak Barrens habitat, a rare and globally imperiled ecological community, on the NBWA and the northwest sands ecosystem in Wisconsin.

Goals:

  • Support and promote expansion of pine-oak barrens habitat on the NBWA and other areas of the northwest sands in Wisconsin.
  • Influence local and state decisions regarding barrens habitat conservation.
  • Provide funding assistance to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for NBWA expansion, restoration, management, research, flora and fauna surveys, education activities, and infrastructure development and maintenance.
  • Support, promote and assist the DNR with volunteer activities relating to environmental education, flora and fauna surveys, research, barrens habitat development and management activities, and other related projects that benefit or augment conservation on the NBWA.
  • Provide educational programs, events, displays and other information which encourage and promote pine-oak barrens conservation and recreational enjoyment of this unique ecological resource.
